FAST
In a single-elimination bracket, one loss ends a player’s or team’s run in the tournament. Every match eliminates one side, and the bracket narrows by half each round until a single winner remains.
FAIRER
Double elimination gives every player or team a second chance before being eliminated.
Seeding determines where each player or team is placed in the bracket before the first round starts. It does not change how many rounds or games the bracket has, it only affects who each entrant faces and when.
Entrants are placed in bracket order based on the order or ranking you provide, following the typical seeding pattern used in most tournaments, so the top seeds are spread apart and can’t meet until later rounds.
Entrants are placed into the bracket in random order, with no ranking applied.
Match the seeding style to how you’re running your event. If you don’t have rankings to work from, Random is the simplest option.
For a standard single-elimination tournament with no byes, the formula is simple:
Games = Players/Teams − 1
This works because every game eliminates exactly one entrant, and every entrant except the eventual winner needs to lose exactly once.
Pick the smallest standard bracket size that fits or exceeds your number of participants.
4 Participants: A 4-player bracket is the smallest standard format, two rounds, three games.
8 Participants: An 8-player bracket fits most small local events, three rounds, seven games.
16 Participants: A common size for club-level or regional tournaments, four rounds, fifteen games.
32 Participants: Suited to larger local or regional events, five rounds, thirty-one games.
64 Participants: Common for major or regional-championship-scale events, six rounds, sixty-three games.
128 Participants: Used for large-scale tournaments, seven rounds, one hundred twenty-seven games.
Not a power of two? If your participant count isn't a power of two (for example, 11 or 25 entrants), organizers typically move up to the next standard bracket size and assign byes to fill the empty slots, so lower-seeded or randomly selected entrants skip the first round. Check how your bracket handles non-standard entrant counts before your event, since bye placement can affect how fair the first round feels.
Whether you’re running a quick single-elimination event or a full double-elimination tournament, the Bracket Builder above handles the structure so you can focus on running your event. Pick your size, format, and seeding style, and generate your bracket in a few clicks.
A tournament bracket is a chart showing the matchups and progression of players or teams through a tournament, from the first round to the final.
In single elimination, one loss removes a player or team from the tournament. The bracket narrows by half each round until one winner remains.
In double elimination, entrants move to a losers bracket after their first loss instead of being eliminated. A second loss ends their tournament. The winners and losers bracket finalists meet in the Grand Finals.
An 8-team single-elimination bracket has 7 total games.
A 16-team single-elimination bracket has 4 rounds.
Seeding is how players or teams are placed into starting positions in the bracket. It determines who faces whom and when, without changing the number of rounds or games.
Use the smallest standard size (4, 8, 16, 32, 64, or 128) that’s equal to or larger than your number of participants.
Yes. The Bracket Builder supports all of these standard sizes.
In single elimination, one loss eliminates a player or team. In double elimination, a player or team needs to lose twice before being eliminated.
