How to Use the Round Robin Generator

1

Add your teams or players. Paste one name per line, or leave the box empty and enter a team count from 2 to 32.
Empty entries are numbered Team 1, Team 2 and so on.

2

Choose single or double round robin. Single means every team plays every other team once. Double means every pairing is played twice, with the order reversed in the second half.

3

Generate the schedule. You get every round in order, who plays whom, and who has the bye when the field is odd. Tick Shuffle the order first if you want a random draw.

4

Enter scores, then print or share. Type results into the match boxes and the standings update as you go. Print the schedule, save it as an image, export CSV, copy it as text or copy a shareable link.

What You Get

How a Round Robin Tournament Schedule Works

In a round robin tournament every team plays every other team. Nobody is eliminated, every team plays the same number of matches, and the final table decides the winner.

The generator builds the schedule with the circle method, the standard way to pair a round robin. One team stays fixed and the rest rotate one seat each round. The teams facing each other across the circle are that round’s matches. After a full cycle, every pair has met exactly once.

Odd fields use a bye. With 7 teams the generator adds an empty slot, and whoever is paired with it sits that round out. Each team gets exactly one bye.

Round Robin Formulas

For 8 teams that is 28 matches over 7 rounds, with 4 matches per round.

Single or Double Round Robin?

Use a single round robin when time is limited. It suits side events, league nights and group stages, and it is the default at most tournaments.

Use a double round robin when fairness over a longer season matters more than time. Every pairing is played twice with the order reversed, which cancels out first-move or home advantage. It doubles the workload: 8 teams go from 28 matches to 56, and from 7 rounds to 14.

Plan your time before you commit. Total time is the number of rounds times the round length. Eight players in a single round robin with 50-minute rounds is 7 rounds, about 6 hours. The round timer keeps each round on schedule.

Round Robin Standings and Tiebreakers

Points decide the table. A win is worth 3, a draw 1 and a loss 0 by default, and you can change all three. Ties are broken by head-to-head points between the tied teams, then score difference, then scores for.

For card games, enter game scores such as 2–1 for a best-of-three. The score difference then works as game differential. If you need Swiss-style tiebreakers such as opponent match win percentage, use the tiebreaker calculator.

Round Robin vs Swiss vs Elimination

Format Best for Matches / player Eliminates players?
Round robinSmall groups, leagues, pool playn − 1No
SwissLarger fields, fixed round countOne per roundNo
Single eliminationFast events, clear winner1 to log₂(n)Yes, after one loss
Double eliminationElimination with a second chanceVariesYes, after two losses

Round robin works best up to about 8 to 10 players. Beyond that the rounds add up: 16 players need 15 rounds. For bigger fields use the Swiss rounds calculator to find the round count, or split players into round robin groups and send the top finishers to a bracket built with the bracket builder.

Who Uses a Round Robin Generator

Trading card game league nights and side events, esports group stages, chess clubs, board game groups, and school or office tournaments. Any event where you want every player to face every other player and rank the results fairly.

Tips for Running a Round Robin

Order only changes the sequence. Everyone still plays everyone. Arrange the names yourself to control who meets early, or tick Shuffle for a random draw.

Plan your tables. Each round needs one table or court per match, which is half the number of teams, rounded down.

Record scores as you go. Standings update live, and the shareable link saves your progress.

FAQ

Common Round Robin Questions

What is a round robin generator?

A round robin generator builds the full match schedule for a round robin tournament, where every team or player plays every other one. You enter the names and it returns each round, who plays whom, and who has the bye. This one also tracks standings as you enter scores.

Paste your teams or players into the box, one per line, or enter a team count. Choose single or double round robin, then select Generate schedule. The tool pairs teams with the circle method so no team plays twice in the same round, and you can print the result, save it as an image, or export it to CSV.

A single round robin has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches, where n is the number of teams. Eight teams play 28 matches, ten teams play 45, and twelve teams play 66. A double round robin has twice as many.

One team sits out each round with a bye. The generator adds an empty slot to make the field even, so every team gets exactly one bye and the schedule runs for n rounds instead of n − 1. Seven teams, for example, play 7 rounds with 3 matches each.

In a single round robin every pair meets once. In a double round robin every pair meets twice, and the second half of the schedule repeats the first with the home and away order reversed. Double is fairer over a long season but takes twice as many rounds.

Teams are ranked by points first. Ties are broken by head-to-head points between the tied teams, then score difference, then scores for. Points for a win, draw and loss default to 3, 1 and 0, and you can change them. For Swiss-style tiebreakers such as opponent win percentage, use the tiebreaker calculator.

A round robin does not use a bracket. It uses a schedule and a standings table, because nobody is eliminated. If you want playoffs after the round robin, take the top finishers and seed them into the bracket builder.

You can add from 2 to 32 teams or players. For larger fields, split the entrants into groups and run a round robin in each, or use a Swiss format, which needs far fewer rounds.

No. It creates the pairings for each round in order. You decide the dates, tables and courts. Each round needs one table or court per match, which is half the number of teams rounded down. To time the rounds themselves, use the round timer.

Yes. It is free, needs no account and nothing to download. It runs in your browser and does not upload your names.
